DAVIDMOVIE.COM DOES IT WITHOUT MUCH FANFARE

davidmovielogo.gifAt DavidMovie.com users will find a bare bones site with no fancy design, no FAQ, and no contact information, just movie categories, a simple search and movies galore. At first blush, the site seems to be a link library, but without a disclaimer present, it seems some films may be hosted here, and some may be linked to from elsewhere.

Organization

This well organized site breaks its content into the following categories: “2008 Movies,” “2006-2007 Movies,” “2004-2005 Movies,” “Before 2004,” “Action/Adventure Movies,” “Drama/Comedy/Family Movies,” “Horror/Thriller Movies,” “Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Mystery Movies,” “Cartoon/Animation,” “Documentaries,” and “Miscellaneous.” Its simple design makes things easy to find and watch.

DavidMovie.com sprinkles a few movie poster icons across the top of the page, beneath the logo. These are actually links to the movies. Every movie’s page has a movie poster, title, production year, and a plot summary.

After choosing a movie, the site generates other suggestions for your next video choice. It uses an interesting algorithm though, as viewing “Deadwood Park” brought up the suggestions, “Shawshank Redemption,” “The Seventh Seal,” “The Bucket List,” “AVPR: Alien vs. Predator – Requiem,” and “Dumb & Dumber.” “The Seventh Seal” could make sense, but the rest are a mystery, especially “Dumb and Dumber.”

The site’s one extra is a bookmark applet to add the site to anything from del.icio.us to one’s browser bookmarks. But, who needs fancy features when there are movies to watch?

The search

The site limits the search to movie titles and/or portions of titles. Don’t try to use keywords or actors’ names here. It won’t work. But, so long as one knows part of the title, the film can be playing on your small screen soon.

For instance, searching for the word “redemption” brought up three search results, all for various streams of “The Shawshank Redemption.” Similarly, a search for “heart” brought up “The Heartbreak Kid,” “Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken,” “A Mighty Heart,” and “Cold Heart Canyon.” So long as one can recall at least a word of the title, one may find it here to watch.

What’s to watch?

There’s more to watch here than at most sites, but even the best site will have a missing film now and then. Not all the movie posters on the front lead to films, so don’t be too disappointed. “Meet the Spartans” brought up page with no search results. This may mean it was once on the site but the host site took it down. There’s no way to know.

Some categories have fewer offerings than others, but all have at least a smattering of entries. The “Documentaries” and “Miscellaneous” areas both need to grow a bit, having a full page, or less of entries, but each still has something to offer.

No matter what one’s in the mood for, it’s here though. Comedy lovers can view “Fool’s Gold,” now in theaters, or viewable on your computer. One might feed their inner child with “Shrek the Halls.” Horror buffs will find a varied selection, especially of more recent films, such as 2006’s “Killing Ariel.” Have a sing along to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” or to “Shania Twain: Up! Live In Chicago.”

Stream quality

The site links to the standard, well-known host sites, such as tudou.com, veoh.com, and youku.com. No surprises here. It doesn’t have its own viewer, so users will end up with whatever the host site provides.

Youku hosted “Deadwood Park,” providing a relatively strong stream with only a few glitches in the beginning. The was movie was divided into four parts, and features a clear picture and sound.

Google Video hosted “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” also providing a strong stream, an impressive feat since the film is whole, not divided into parts. The upload provided decent picture quality, but terrible sound quality. It sounded as if the characters were all whispering their lines.

Conclusion

DavidMovie.com provides a bare bones movie site with the best feature of all – movies that play. Although users may find the occasional dead link, in general, if it’s there, it will stream. The site doesn’t waste its, or the users, time with fancy “features” or “extras.” Instead, it gives users what they really want – movies to watch at the click of a mouse.

Hey Mark,

Glad you like DavidMovie.com. I don't think we said the design was a hindrance.

Most everything mentioned in your review was basically true. However, you failed to mention that every freakin movie (that I have watched) has a huge, bright DAVIDMOVIE.COM banner in the top corner.

EXTREMELY distracting and irritating! And, I might add, arrogant and unnecessary. Hey David, we know it is from your site, we are ON the site! Sheesh.

Too many other great options out there for movies than to have to get slapped in the eye with yet another ad/banner for the entire film. Get rid of that eyesore, and the site will be decent overall.

Hey M.J.
The banner was added later. It was big and bright when I visited in February 2008. The site's still pretty useful though, but I agree that the logo on the video makes it a bit hard to concentrate on the movie.

Thanks for visiting. Hope to see you again!

Why am I asked to download Zango in order to watch DavidMovie.com on my computer.
I'm afraid this site will slip a virus into my computer. What's up with that?

Hi Mrs. H,
It's best if you use Mozilla Firefox to visit these sites and enable its pop up blocker. Also, install thje Add On called "Ad Blocker Plus". That will block Zango and other ads from being able to load when you surf. Don't install Zango or anything other program from a pop up. The sites will still work even if you don't install it. Happy movie watching!

At this point I've concluded that piracy isn't the cancer the news media insists.
We pay for cable service, which I do not watch, and in about 6-8 months after a movie's release, it comes onto a movie channel.

Now whether they get paid while it's in the theater or when it comes to television, we ARE paying them. On top of which, we sit through commercials and buy products which again, puts money in the film studio's bank account on top of the monthly internet service AND money made off website hits.
The actors get paid outright and if they get a box office percentage, well then that's just another factor in regards to how spoiled they are.

JUST HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES DO THEY EXPECT US TO PAY THEM FOR ONE PRODUCT?????

By my count, they're getting paid 3-6 times for a movie or television show.
The belief that downloading movies while they're still in the theater or downloading television shows and avoiding commercials is a crime, is a crime in itself!

I say it again....
JUST HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES DO YOU EXPECT TO GET PAID FOR ONE PRODUCT!
Now or later, I'm still paying you and it's not like the entertainment industry is open to just anyone that wants a job. If it was, half of America would be musicians, comedians, actors and dancers but wait, we already are.
We're just not able to find employment as such.
